What’s New at Disneyland Summer 2026

July is here, and it’s time to entertain the troops. Summer at Disneyland is always a little bit magical, but this year, the resort is pulling out all the stops. After a recent media visit with my own three kids in tow, I can tell you the new additions are worth the trip.

The big theme this season: kids rule. Disneyland’s “Kids Rule Summer” runs through Sept. 7, and the new experiences lean into exactly what kids love most right now.

The Millennium Falcon got a whole new mission

If your household has any Mandalorian fans — and mine definitely does — Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run just became a must-do all over again. As of May 22, the ride debuted a brand-new mission timed to the release of “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Now your crew chooses their own destination — Bespin, the wreckage of the second Death Star near Endor, or the city-planet Coruscant — and engineers get to call Grogu in real time during the mission. My kids, ranging from 7 to 14, all loved it so much that we went on it three times in a row.

While you’re in Galaxy’s Edge, keep an eye out for BDX droids roaming Black Spire Station and note that, for the first time, you can encounter characters from across the Star Wars timeline — Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Leia and Han Solo could all just be right around the corner.

Bluey, dance parties and more summer fun

More Bluey? Yes, please. “Bluey’s Best Day Ever!” at the Fantasyland Theatre is the surprise hit of the summer for the little-little (or even not-so-little) crowd.

Bluey and Bingo appear live on stage, and the whole venue transforms into a fun fair with games, dance-alongs and themed food. It’s a great time to give your tired legs a break and sit in the shade to refuel while your kids dance along. Don’t miss the Magic Asparagus (actually a chocolate-covered pretzel), the loaded Troubadour Baked Potato or the Mud Cake Cold Brew for a sweet pick-me-up that may just be my new favorite coffee drink at Disneyland.

Over at Disney California Adventure, the new “Disney Friends Dance Party” in Hollywood Land is a great evening option when energy is somehow still high. Back in Disneyland, Stitch’s Intergalactic Beach Party Blast returns to Tomorrowland Terrace. And on July 2, Soarin’ Across America made its debut — a new version of the popular attraction taking guests over iconic American landscapes.

Plan ahead to save

If you’re going with kids ages 3 to 9, the kids’ summer ticket offer is a real steal: $50 per child for a one-day park hopper valid through Sept. 7. Hotel guests can also snag up to 15% off Sunday–Thursday stays through that same date. Reservations fill up, so book early — especially if you’re targeting peak summer weeks.

Beal will take the stage to lead his études that depict and illustrate his own life with multiple sclerosis. Conductor Leonard Slatkin leads from the podium, guiding the world premiere of Four Score – a piece written for him by Beal for his 80th birthday – and Kelly Hall-Tompkins as she joins LACO again to perform Body in Motion.

Activities begin at 11 a.m. and concert begins at 2 p.m.

From Grammys to Kids’ Beats: Theron Thomas and Son Sumo Create Music for the Whole Family

The award-winning songwriter teams up with his 12-year-old son on Sumo’s World, a playful yet meaningful music project blending fun, education, and family.

Meet Theron Thomas, a Grammy award-winning producer, songwriter, rapper, singer and father to 12-year-old Sumo. Together, the father-son duo created “Sumo’s World,” which features educational songs with fun beats, catchy tunes and animated music videos. We got the chance to talk to Theron about his new kid-friendly music project, relocating to L.A. and life as a musician and father.

Congratulations on your debut EP Let’s Learn and newest single “Koala”. Tell us about Let’s Learn, “Koala,” and your family-centered musical collaboration with your son, Sumo’s World.

The EP Let’s Learn was basically just me and my son wanting to do songs about learning and education in a fun, modern way. It’s so funny that Let’s Learn is the first EP, but “Koala” is the first song we made. We wanted to make music for children with production that parents could play. So it was all about driving in the carpool line and hearing “The Wheels On The Bus” and “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and being like, “Oh my god, we gotta listen to that one more time!” My son wanted to make music since he was three, and we finally said, “Ok let’s make some music.” So I think the whole journey of working with my son is full circle because my dad worked with me when I was a kid and taught me everything that I know. And then when my son came to me at six years old saying, “Daddy I know why you ain’t making music with me, because you’re afraid I’ll steal your fans.” I was like, “Ok you’re not gonna play with me little boy, we’re gonna get in the studio and make some music!” Then we went and made “Koala,” and then we made Let’s Learn, and now we’re here.

What set’s Sumo’s World apart from other kid-friendly music?

What sets Sumo’s World apart from other kid-friendly music is the global appeal. I’ve written global hit songs for the world like “APT.”, “Seven” by Jewel Cook, “About Damn Time” by Lizzo and more. So I wanted to make music for all children and that caters more to a pop audience. Sumo is for everybody, everybody can enjoy it.

Did you have a mentor growing up? What role did that person play in your life and your career?

Of course, it would have to be my dad, and he played the best role. He boosted my head with confidence, love and true belief in myself, and I think I’m doing the same thing with Sumo. And as far as what it did for my career, I think it took me to where I am right now. I think I owe all of that to him. I met other mentors and people and all with the wave of my career, but definitely I wouldn’t be here without my dad.

How did the collaboration with your son Sumo start? What role does he take on in creating new music?

Sumo knew he wanted to be a musician from a very young age.

From three years old my son has been telling me, “Hey dad, I want to write songs!” and I’m like, “That three year old!” Like you know what you want to do at three? And at six he comes up to me: “I know why you don’t want to make music with me, it’s because you’re afraid I might steal your fans!” Then the producers Sam and Sean who made Sumo’s World with me, they brought it to life. They were in Atlanta at the house, and we were doing studio sessions, so I’m like, “We’re gonna make music right now.” And, you know, all the songs are Sumo’s ideas. I really go to him and I talk to him and I say, “Sumo, what do you want to sing about? What do you want to talk about?” and the first song we did was “Koala.” And he was like, “Dad, I want to sing about a pet koala cause you know that’s different, you know everybody got a pet cat and a pet dog, but nobody got a pet koala, you know what I mean?”, and I’m like “I get it, I don’t know how we’re gonna make a song about a pet koala, but we’re gonna figure it out.” So we started on production then started working on melodies, and we made “Koala.” Sumo is doing a lot more writing now, but in the beginning, we were just bringing his ideas to life. I wanted to make sure the ideas were from a child because they’re for children.

What advice would you give parents who want to collaborate with their kids?

If I were to give parents advice, I would say do it, just don’t make it too serious, you know? I’ve been in the music business for a long time. I’ve seen the effect on child stars who start from an early age on their adult life and how difficult it gets. So if I’m a parent, I’m telling them try to find a way to make it where your kid can still be a kid, but they still get to enjoy the joy of making music, they see that it’s a real job, they see that it’s serious, but you don’t make it their life. You allow them the space and time to grow up.

You and your son recently relocated to L.A. from Atlanta, how was the move?

Oh man, relocation. The move so far is good. Everybody’s excited, everybody likes it. Obviously the weather is amazing, you know. We have sidewalks now, we didn’t have them in Atlanta. I think everybody’s excited for the new energy that L.A. is gonna bring us and see where it goes.

What are some of your and your son’s favorite spots and activities in and around L.A.?

Oh man, what are our favorite spots? I’m gonna tell you we are too new to have any. As of right now, I’ll tell you the movies, that’s our favorite pastime, so you can find us at some point in somebody’s movie theater seeing something. We love love love the movies, so right now that’s as far as we’ve gotten, but we’re definitely gonna have a lot of new favorites as we stay here.

From beach days to backyard fireworks, LA Parent staff share their must-do summer traditions across Southern California.

School’s out, the kids are buzzing with energy, and summer is officially in full swing across Southern California. With more time to unwind and connect, our LA Parent team shares their cherished seasonal rituals, from savoring ice cream on the Newport Pier to enjoying sing-alongs under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl. Whether you’re seeking a quick beach escape or a memorable family outing, these favorite local traditions capture the magic of summer in SoCal.

New Swan Shakespeare Festival

A couple of years ago, my mom surprised me with tickets on my birthday to see “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” at the New Swan Shakespeare Festival hosted at UC Irvine. Ever since then, it’s been a tradition for my mom and me to see a production on my birthday. I never liked reading Shakespeare in school, but I love watching Shakespearean performances. I particularly enjoy the beautiful theater that New Swan sets up in the middle of UC Irvine’s campus. The warm lights shining through the summer night as someone performs poetry is my favorite way to end my birthday. –Ash Wang

Palm Desert

My family and I love going to the desert for July 4^th weekend. We stay together in our house and enjoy the fireworks from our backyard. We love swimming and playing board games as a family. After dinner, we usually get Handel’s ice cream and watch a movie. In the mornings, we get breakfast from our favorite restaurant, Wilma & Frieda. The homemade pop tarts and cinnamon rolls are amazing! We also love heading to 123 Farm, where they have unique festivals like the lavender festival we went to last year. It’s my kids’ favorite weekend of summer. –Chelsea Parrish

Echo Park Lake

I love that we have this wetlands oasis just on the other side of Downtown L.A. Early in the morning, there are more Canada geese than people here, and they make you move around them as you get your steps in; this is their world, and we’re just allowed to co-exist in it. People from all walks of life flock to this bountiful lake to work, fish, daydream, take their lunch break and exercise. My favorite time to visit is in late spring and early summer, when the lotus flowers bloom and the lotus pads are thick and emerald, catching the sunlight as they sway against the water. It’s easy to find parking around the park, and yummy spots like Stories Books and Café and Little Fish Echo Park are just a short walk away. –Cassandra Lane

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music Sing-A-Long” at the Hollywood Bowl

This is two of my favorite things wrapped into one: A night at the Hollywood Bowl with a showing of my favorite movie on the screens, with the Philharmonic playing in the background. Is there a better way to spend a summer night than at the Bowl? Bring food, wine, family or friends. It’s such a beautiful setting. Arrive early for this show because people dress up as characters from the movie, and they are invited on stage prior to the show. We started going to the Hollywood Bowl when our daughters were in early elementary school and have continued as they have become young adults — with the Sing-A-Long being the first show we look for on the schedule. –Elena Epstein

Theatricum Botanicum

In high school, I fell in love with Shakespeare — and Topanga Canyon — through Theatricum Botanicum’s summer theater camp, learning Elizabethan songs, sonnets and monologues among the oak trees. Summer became synonymous with the magical outdoor theater, and to this day my summer isn’t complete without attending the theater company’s signature production, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Now that I live in East L.A., I love driving out early so I can stop by Hidden Treasures to browse the eclectic mix of clothes, accessories and trinkets followed by a picnic in Theatricum’s gardens before the show. –Nina Harada

Zuma Beach

It takes me less than five minutes to throw a beach chair, towel, snacks, sunscreen, a book or magazine and my boogie board into the car. The short prep time is part of what makes this a great excursion. The beach takes minimal planning. From there, it’s pretty much 30 minutes until I’m set up in the sand at Zuma Beach — and the relaxing begins. When the heat comes to the Valley, my escape is to hit the beach, and it doesn’t get any better than Zuma. I enjoy the cooler weather, the waves and the fact that I can usually find (free) parking along Pacific Coast Highway. It’s total serenity. –Ron Epstein

Salt & Straw: Berries, Berries and More Berries

Salt & Straw is an ice cream shop that, along with being delicious, is known for its unconventional flavors such as pear and blue cheese and strawberry-honey-balsamic with black pepper. The shop has a set menu of flavors available year-round and a seasonal menu with flavors that rotate every month. My favorite monthly menu lands in July, when all of the flavors are centered around berries. My love for berries only increases in the July heat, so enjoying a scoop of the goat-cheese-marionberry-habanero ice cream at the Salt & Straw in Downtown Disney is a summer staple. I especially enjoy eating my ice cream in one of the rocking chairs by the fireplace in the Disneyland resort lobby while being serenaded by Disney songs played on the piano. –Ash Wang

Newport Beach

My family and I love driving down to Newport Beach for the day. We go to the pier and get frozen chocolate-covered bananas, our favorite! We usually walk on the beach and put our feet in the ocean. We love spending the rest of the day at the outdoor shops and eating dinner at True Food Kitchen before heading back. It’s always a quick trip, but it feels like a little vacation. –Chelsea Parrish

‘Stories of Dad: ‘Manecdotes’ Delivers Heart on Stage in Burbank

Just after Father’s Day, eight of L.A.’s storytellers will take the stage for one night only, sharing a rich blend of raw, humorous, surprising and touching true tales about their fathers — or about being fathers themselves.

“Manecdotes” returns to The Colony Theatre in Burbank at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24. The 90-minute collection of stories will be preceded at 6:30 p.m. with a half-hour of live music by the Nash-Berry Family Band, featuring Ken Berry, a guitar player who toured with and continues to work in the studio with Barry Manilow.

Berry has written music for television for more than 30 years. His wife, Connie Nassios, is a keyboard and bass player who toured with Aureus. Their daughter, Abbi Berry, is an award-winning jazz and pop vocalist, pianist, guitarist and songwriter and teacher. The Nash-Berry Family Band will add musical interludes throughout the show as well.

The Nash-Berry Family Band will perform before the “Manecdotes” show, a celebration of fathers and fatherhood through stories and songs, on June 24.

“Manecdotes” is a benefit for Burbank’s Family Service Agency, an organization that has provided mental health and counseling services for students, families, couples and veterans for 70 years.

Suzanne Weerts, a local writer and storyteller, is the producer and director of the show. Weerts has brought two seasons of the national show “Listen to Your Mother,” as well as her own shows “Momnipresent,” “Diversity: Stories of Connection in an Urban Jungle,” “Go There,” “Home” and “Jingle Tales” to The Colony Theatre stage.

As producing artistic director for JAM Creative, Weerts develops storytelling productions as benefits for worthy causes. Since 2016, JAM Creative has raised more than $50,000 for local charities.

Here are five of our favorite family-friendly Vegas picks this spring:

1. Shark Reef Aquarium: Dive Into Underwater Adventures

The Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino will celebrate its 25th anniversary this summer with special events and activations. For now, visitors can view displays with more than 3,400 creatures from 140 species, including 14 types of sharks within 1.6 million gallons of water and 14 exhibits. Guests also can “dive” into the ocean depths through the immersive Undersea Explorer Virtual Reality theater. For an extra fee, kids (and adults) can feed sharks, sea turtles and stingrays. 2. Sphere Experience: Futuristic Fun for the Whole Family

If it’s in your budget, Sphere is worth the splurge. At The Sphere Experience, guests can chat and even crack jokes with the world’s most advanced humanoid robot, Aura, and marvel at a 50-foot holographic wall. Included in the experience is a screening of “Postcard from Earth” from Academy Award-nominated director Darren Aronofsky.

The sci-fi-meets-nature, 4D film features seat haptics with active movement sensations, flashing lights, visual and sound effects and atmospheric simulations of fog, scents and wind. (Pregnant women and those with sensory sensitivities should consider whether it’s for them. Accessible seating is available upon request.).

Word to the wise: Lower seats are best if you tend to get queasy. In addition, Sphere’s spectacular spring lineup of multi-sensory entertainment features immersive concert film V-U2, plus shows by Dead & Company with John Mayer, the Eagles and Kenny Chesney. 3. Family Pools and Movie Nights

Las Vegas resorts are renowned for their lavish pools, and poolside time is a fun way for families to spend Vegas downtime together. My favorite part of growing up in L.A. were the warm summer nights where time stretched to make space for all the magic those twilight hours held. Sketching the silhouettes of our neighbor’s palm trees, I’d keep my dad company as he barbecued dinner well into the night. To my delight, our summer traditions included catching shows at Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon.

Those magical summer nights have finally arrived, so you can start or continue your own traditions. From night markets serving creative culinary dishes that our city is known for to outdoor movies and concerts, we’ve rounded up the best places to bring the whole family for some nighttime fun.

Night markets

626 Night Market
